Using Alignment Guides

You can create and display alignment guides to aid in positioning objects on a page. You can also turn on the snapping to guides feature which makes objects snap to alignment guides when you drag near a guideline or guidelines.

Guides options can be set per page.

To Add Guides

 

Horizontal Guide

 

  1. Mouse over on the “Top” Ruler.

  2. When the mouse pointer becomes the white arrowhead, drag a guide downward to position it where you want to place.

Vertical Guide             

  1. Mouse over on the “Left” Ruler.

  2. When the mouse pointer becomes the white arrowhead, drag a guide to the right to position it where you want to place.

 

 

To Adjust the Guide Position Precisely

  1. Double-click on a guide that you want to adjust the position of.

  2. Type a value to the Guide position edit box in the Edit Guide dialog box.

  3. Click OK.

    The double-clicked guide will move to the new position.

To Create a New Guide Precisely

  1. Double-click on a guide that you want to adjust the position of.

  2. Type a value to the Guide position edit box in the Edit Guide dialog box.

  3. Select the Keep the original guide checkbox.

  4. Click OK.

    A new guide will be created at the specified position.

When you want to place a new guide at a specified distance from an existing guide, you can type like “5.00+3.00” in, for example.

To Show or Hide Guides

Do one of the following:

  • Select the Guides checkbox from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon. Deselect the checkbox to hide guides.

  • Select the Guides checkbox from the Show & Enable panel in the View tab of the Ribbon. Deselect the checkbox to hide guides.

  • Press Shift+F8 to toggle Show Guides and Hide Guides.

 

Guides are not shown.

Guides are shown.

 

Showing guides does not mean objects will snap to guides. You must enable the snapping to guides independently.

To Use Snap to Guides

  1. Do one of the following:

  • Select the Snap To Guides checkbox from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon.

  • Press F8.

Even while the guides are not shown, you can enable the snapping to guides independently.

  1. Do the following:

  • Align an object or objects snapping them to guides.

  • Move objects.

 

Example

Drag the object toward the target guides to which you want to align them.

Ctrl-drag the guide to move the object snapped to it together.

 

When you want to ignore Snap to Guides temporarily, press the Tab key and drag.

 

To Disable Snap to Guides

Do one of the following:

  • Deselect the Snap To Guides checkbox from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon.

  • Press F8 while Snap To Guides is enabled.

To Remove Guides

 

Horizontal Guide

 

  1. Mouse over on a horizontal guide that you want to delete.

  2. When the mouse pointer becomes the “Move” pointe, drag it to the “Top” Ruler.

Vertical Guide             

  1. Mouse over on a vertical guide that you want to delete.

  2. When the mouse pointer becomes the “Move” pointe, drag it to the “Left” Ruler.

 

You can clear all of the guides by selecting Remove All Guides from the context menu when no objects are selected on the page.

 

To Set Up Guides Options

  1. Click Set Up Grid & Guides from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon.

  2. Set the options.

  3. Click OK.

Grid Options

Option

Description

Show guidelines

Show or hide guides.

Snap objects to guidelines

Enable or disable the snapping to guide.

Guideline Color

Select a color of the guidelines from the pop-up color palette.

Snap distance

Type a value. When an object approaches within this distance from the guidelines, it snaps to the guidelines.
