Using Alignment Grid

You can display a grid of vertical and horizontal lines to aid in positioning objects on a page. You can also turn on the snapping to grid feature which makes objects snap into alignment with the grid when you drag near a grid line.

Grid options can be set per page.

To Show or Hide Grid

  1. Do one of the following:

  • Select the Show Grid checkbox from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon. Deselect the checkbox to hide grid.

  • Select the Grid checkbox from the Show & Enable panel in the View tab of the Ribbon. Deselect the checkbox to hide grid.

  • Press Shift+F7 to toggle Show Grid and Hide Grid.

Grid is not shown.

Grid is shown.

 

Showing grid does not mean objects will snap to grid. You must enable the snapping to grid independently.

 

To Use Snap to Grid

  1. Do one of the following:

  • Select the Snap To Grid checkbox from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon.

  • Press F7.

Even while the grid is not shown, you can enable the snapping to grid independently.

 

  1. Do the following:

  • Align an object or objects.

  • Resize an object.

  • Draw an object.

  • Edit vector paths.

 

Example

Drag the object toward the target grid to which you want to align them.

Drag the corner handle to resize the object to fit the object’s height to the target grid.

 

When you want to ignore Snap to Grid temporarily, press the Tab key and drag.

 

You can press Shift + Arrow keys to make objects jump to the next grid.

 

To Disable Snap to Grid

Do one of the following:

  • Deselect the Snap To Grid checkbox from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon.

  • Press F7 while Snap To Grid is enabled.

To Set Up the Grid Options

  1. Click Set Up Grid & Guides from the Grid & Guides panel in the Layout tab of the Ribbon.

  2. Set the options.

  3. Click OK.

Description

Show gridlines

Show or hide grid.

Snap objects to gridlines

Enable or disable the snapping to grid.

Snap to

Select one from the following:

Snap to Both – snap to both X (vertical lines) and Y (horizontal lines)

Snap to X – snap to X (vertical lines) only.

Snap to Y – snaps to Y (horizontal lines) only.

Horizontal spacing

Type a value for the horizontal distance between vertical gridlines.

Vertical spacing

Type a value for the vertical distance between horizontal gridlines.

Snap factor X

Set the division of the horizontal spacing. An object will also snap to those division lines which may not be visible.

Snap facto Y

Set the division of the vertical spacing. . An object will also snap to those division lines which may not be visible.

 

Use of Snap Factors

 

Horizontal spacing: 1 in

Vertical spacing: 1 in

Snap factor X: 1.00

Snap facto Y: 1.00

Horizontal spacing: 4 in

Vertical spacing: 4 in

Snap factor X: 0.25 = 1/4

Snap facto Y: 0.25 = 1/4

The visible gridlines look different, but the snapping to grid behavior is identical in both cases. Sometimes, too many gridlines may look too busy.
