Aligning objects

Aligning objects

You can quickly and easily align or distribute selected objects using the Align commands.

To Align an Object to the Page Bounds

  1. Select an object.

  2. Click one of the following:

    • Click one of the Align icons from the Align panel in the Home tab of the Ribbon.

    • Select one of the Align functions from the Align drop-down list in the Draw tab of the Ribbon.

Align to the Top

Align to the Bottom

Align to the Left

Align to the Right

Align Center Vertical

Align Center Horizontal

Align at the Center

 

To Align Objects to One Another

  1. Select an object (Key Object) that you want to align other objects to.

  2. Select one or more objects.

  3. Click one of the following:

    • Click one of the Align icons from the Align panel in the Home tab of the Ribbon.

    • Select one of the Align functions from the Align drop-down list in the Draw tab of the Ribbon.

    • Right-click and select one of the Align functions from the Align submenu in the context menu.

Original Position – Item A is the Key Object.

Align to the Top

Align to the Bottom

Align to the Left

Align to the Right

Align Center Vertical

Align Center Horizontal

Align at the Center

 

Alignment will be performed based on the Key Object which will not move. Please refer to: Key Object. Also, the default alignment is based on object bounding boxes.

 

To Distribute Space between Objects

  1. Select 3 or more objects that you want to distribute.

  2. Click one of the following:

    • Click one of the Distribute icons from the Align panel in the Home tab of the Ribbon.

    • Select one of the Distribute functions from the Align drop-down list in the Draw tab of the Ribbon.

    • Right-click and select one of the Distribute functions from the Align submenu in the context menu.

Distribution will not be performed based on the Key. Positions of any objects between 2 ends (Horizontal – Left and Right, Vertical – Top and Bottom) in the selection will be adjusted.

 

Some vector objects may have thicker outline than others. You may want to align objects considering thickness of vector objects. Text objects can have the text margins. You may want to align text objects based on font glyphs instead of objects bounding boxes.

To Align Outside of Outlines or Font Glyphs

  1. Select an object or objects.

  2. Click Align Bounding Box from the Align drop-down list in the Draw tab of the Ribbon to deselect it.

  3. Apply an Align or a Distribute command.

This Align Bounding Box setting is applicable to align objects from other places such as from the Home tab and the context menu.
