Using the Inks Pane

Using the Inks Pane

You can do the following using the Inks pane.

  • Apply inks to objects.

  • Add inks to the presets.

  • Edit the ink presets.

  • Load inks from the current document.

  • Save and load the ink presets.

The Inks pane can be placed or docked vertically or horizontally.

 

The term “Inks” here is the collective naming of solid colors, gradient inks, and hatch inks.

When you arrange inks in the following number of columns and display them in the Inks pane, the arrangement will align nicely in the pop-up ink palettes.

Solid Colors: 10 columns, Gradient Inks and Hatch Inks: 7 columns

 

To Open the Inks Pane

Select the Page Navigator checkbox from the Panes panel in the View tab of the Ribbon.

To Apply an Ink to Objects

  1. Select a vector object or objects.

  2. Select an ink type that you want to apply: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  1. Select a target type: Fill, Outline, or Text.

  2. Click an ink tile that you want to apply.

You can also apply inks by dragging an ink tile from the Inks list in the Inks pane to vector objects.

 



 

To Add a Solid Color

  1. Select the Solid Colors  icon.

  2. Click the Add  icon.

  3. Select a color that you want to add.

              

  4. Click Add.

Color Options

Color preset tiles

Click a tile either from colors tiles or grayscale color tiles.

Custom

Description

 

Color spectrum window

Click a color. The associated values will get updated accordingly.

  • When pressing the Left or Right Arrow key, the Hue value and RGB values will be updated.

  • When pressing the Up or Down Arrow key, the Sat and RBG values will be updated.

Luminosity slider

Drag the slider that is located at the right side of the Color spectrum window to adjust the brightness. You can press the Up or Down Arrow key. The associated values will get updated accordingly.

  • The Lum value and RGB values will be updated.

Hue, Sat, Lum edit boxes

Set Hue, Saturation, and Luminosity if you know the exact values.

Red, Green, Blue edit boxes

Set RGB color values if you know the exact values.

New preview

When you set or adjust the color, it will be updated.

Current preview

When the current color is loaded from the selected object, or color tile, it will be displayed as well as loading the color values.

Select (Eyedropper)

You can pick a color from the screen pixels instead.

Add

When the new color is set, it gets enabled. Click it to add the new color to the Inks list.

Cancel

Close the dialog box without adding a new color.

 

To Add a Gradient

  1. Select the Gradients  icon.

  2. Click the Add  icon.

  3. Create a gradient that you want to add.

  4. Select a gradient type.

  5. Add gradient stops.

  6. Select one of the gradient stops to set the color, position, and brightness.

  7. Do the same for all gradient stops.

  8. Click Add.

Gradient Options

Option

Description

Type

Select one, either Linear or Elliptical from the drop-down list.

     

Direction

Select one from the presets drop-down list. Preview will be based on the gradient settings.

Linear – 8 presets

Elliptical – 5 presets

Angle

When Linear is selected, you can set the angle of the direction.

Gradient stops

Click on the position where you want to add a gradient stop.

Add stop icon

You can add gradient stops by click this icon. Drag the gradient stops to reposition it.

Delete stop icon

Select a gradient stop that you want to delete and click this icon to delete it.

Stop Color

Select a gradient stop of which you want to set the color and set it.

Stop Position

When you want to adjust the position of the selected gradient stop numerically, set it in percentage from 0 (Left) to 100 (Right).

Stop Brightness

Select a gradient stop of which you want to set the brightness and set it in percentage from 0 (Darkest) to 100 (Brightest).

New preview

When you set or adjust the gradient, it will be updated.

Current preview

When the current gradient is loaded from the selected object, or gradient tile, it will be displayed as well as loading the gradient settings.

Select (Eyedropper)

Select a gradient stop and pick a color from the screen pixels instead of using the Stop Color pop-up color palette.

Add

When the new gradient is set, it gets enabled. Click it to add the new gradient to the Inks list.

Cancel

Close the dialog box without adding a new gradient.

 

To Add a Hatch

  1. Select the Hatches  icon.

  2. Click the Add  icon.

  3. Create a hatch that you want to add.

              

  4. Add layers if needed.

  5. Select one of the layers and set the line weight, angle, origin, offset, dash type, and color.

  6. Do the same for all layers.

  7. Set the backdrop color if needed.

  8. Click Add.

Hatch Options

Option

Description

Layer drop-down list

The added layers will be displayed in the drop-down list.

Add

Click this button to add layers.

Clear

Select a layer that you want to delete from the Layer drop-down list and click this button to delete it.

Line weight

Select a layer and set the line weight.

Line angle

Select a layer and set the line angle between 0 and 360 degree.

Line origin

Select a layer and set the origin or starting point. Generally, set this to 0 or the same value as the line offset.

Line offset

Select a layer and set the distance between lines.

Dash type

Select a layer and set a dash for the line if needed.

Line color

Select a layer and set the line color from the pop-up color palette.

Backdrop color

Set the background color if needed. It is transparent by default.

New preview

When you set or adjust the hatch, it will be updated.

Current preview

When the current hatch is loaded from the selected object, or hatch tile, it will be displayed as well as loading the hatch settings.

Add

When the new hatch is set, it gets enabled. Click it to add the new hatch to the Inks list.

Close the dialog box without adding a new hatch.

 

To Add an Ink Adjusting the Selected Ink

When you want to add an ink adjusting the existing ink, you can do one of the following first and then add an ink. The selected ink will be loaded as the Current settings to the Add dialog box.

Do one of the following:

  • Select an object that has the ink from which you want to use to create a new ink.

  • Select an ink tile from which you want to use to create a new ink in the Inks pane.

Example

 

You cannot add more than the maximum number of inks per ink type. When the maximum number is reached, the Add icon will be disabled  until you delete some inks.

To Delete Inks

  1. Select an ink type of which you want to delete inks: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  2. Select an ink or inks that you want to delete in the Inks list.

  • Sequential selection: Click the 1st ink and Shift-click the last ink that you want to delete.

  • Random selection: Click the 1st ink and Ctrl-click each ink subsequently.

  1. Do one of the following:

  • Click the pop-up menu  icon.

  • Right-click in the Inks list.

  1. Select Delete ColorsDelete Gradients, or Delete Hatches.

When you want to delete all inks from the Inks list, you can select Clear All ColorsClear All Gradient Inks, or Clear All Hatch Inks.

 

To Edit an Ink

  1. Select an ink type of which you want to edit an ink: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  1. Select an ink that you want to edit in the Inks list.

  2. Do one of the following:

  • Click the pop-up menu  icon.

  • Right-click in the Inks list.

  1. Select Edit ColorEdit Gradient, or Edit Hatch.

  2. The settings of the current ink will be loaded to the Edit dialog box. Edit the settings.

  3. Click Update.

     

To Arrange the Order of Ink Tiles

  1. Select an ink type of which you want to arrange the ink tiles: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  2. Select an ink or inks of which you want to arrange the order in the Inks list.

  • Sequential selection: Click the 1st ink and Shift-click the last ink that you want to delete.

  • Random selection: Click the 1st ink and Ctrl-click each ink subsequently.

  1. Drag the selection to a new position.

 

Changing the ink tiles in the Inks pane will be reflected to the Preset Inks of the pop-up ink palette.

 

 

To Save Inks

  1. Select an ink type of which you want to save the ink set: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  2. Do one of the following:

  • Click the pop-up menu  icon.

  • Right-click in the Inks list.

  1. Select Save Color SetSave Gradient Ink Set, or Save Hatch Ink Set.

  2. Navigate to a folder in which you want to save the ink set in the Save Ink dialog box.

  3. Type a file name in the File Name field.

  4. Click Save.

To Load Ink Set

  1. Select the ink type of which you want to load an ink set: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  2. Do one of the following:

  • Click the pop-up menu  icon.

  • Right-click in the Inks list.

  1. Select Load Color SetLoad Gradient Ink Set, or Load Hatch Ink Set.

  2. Click Yes or No in the warning dialog box. When Yes is selected, you can save the current set before loading a new set.

  3. Navigate to a folder in which you want to load the ink set in the Open dialog box.

  4. Select an ink set file.

  5. Click Open.

The current ink set will be replaced with the new ink set in the Inks list.

To Append Ink Set

  1. Select the ink type of which you want to append an ink set: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  2. Do one of the following:

  • Click the pop-up menu  icon.

  • Right-click in the Inks list.

  1. Select Append Color SetAppend Gradient Ink Set, or Append Hatch Ink Set.

  2. Navigate to a folder in which you want to append the ink set in the Open dialog box.

  3. Select an ink set file.

  4. Click Open.

  5. Click OK in the warning dialog box when the warning message is displayed.

The new ink set will be added after the current ink set in the Inks list.

For solid colors, you can append the color used from the Recent Colors list to the Solid Color Ink list by selecting Append from Recent Colors.

 

 

To Load Inks from Document

  1. Open a document from which you want to load inks.

  2. Select the ink type of which you want to load inks: Solid Colors, Gradients, or Hatches.

  3. Do one of the following:

  • Click the pop-up menu  icon.

  • Right-click in the Inks list.

  1. Select Load Document ColorsAppend Document Gradient Inks, or Append Document Hatch Inks.

  2. Click Yes or No in the warning dialog box. When Yes is selected, you can save the current set before loading a new set.

The current ink set will be replaced with the document ink set in the Inks list.
